Named after the statue of the Virgin Mary located in the square, Marienplatz is at the very heart of Munich and is dominated by its impressive neo-Gothic New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus). Featured in the tower of the Rathaus is its famed Glockenspiel which chimes 3 to 4 times daily with moving clockwork figures that display vignettes from Munich's history.

This is King Ludwig's most famous castle, built in the neo-late romanesque style. The 15 rooms you see on the tour show astonishing craftsmanship and richness of detail. The best view of the castle is from the nearby Mary's Bridge (Marienbruecke).

Hirschgarten, or Deer Park, is Bavaria's largest beer garden, covering roughly 50 acres, and is able to hold a capacity of roughly 8,000 beer drinkers and merrymakers. The park is well-suited to children, with playgrounds and lots of room to run, and is a favorite for family picnics, barbecues or afternoon chess games between friends.
