Looking more like a church spire than a monument to a writer, the Gothic-inspired Scott Monument is one of Edinburgh's most famous landmarks, built to commemorate Sir Walter Scott after his death in 1832. Since the monument's opening in 1846, millions of people have climbed the 200 foot structure to admire its commanding views of the city and to obtain a closer look at the statuettes of characters from Scott's works.
