The Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is the birthplace of the American National Anthem. During the War of 1812, the 18th-century brick fort defended the Baltimore harbor and stopped a British advance into the city. The valiant defense of the fort by 1,000 Americans inspired Francis Scott Key to compose the anthem.
